From cold plunge pools to 3-minute freezing showers, cold water therapy has exploded in popularity over the past few years. Proponents claim it boosts testosterone, burns fat, sharpens focus, eliminates depression, and accelerates muscle recovery. But what does the actual science say?
The short answer: some benefits are well-supported, others are overstated โ and the how and when matters enormously.
What the Science Actually Supports
1. Reduced Muscle Soreness After Exercise
This is one of the most robust findings. Multiple randomised controlled trials show that cold water immersion (10โ15ยฐC for 10โ15 minutes) after intense exercise significantly reduces delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) in the following 24โ96 hours.
